Hurricanes for the Hurricane

October 28, 2012

In the words of Sophia Petrillo, a hurricane’s a-comin’.   Please stock up on batteries, water, non-perishable foods, and then batten down the hatches and stay safe.

We have finished battening down our hatches, moving our herbs inside, filling pitchers with water just in case, etc.  Since we’re the hurricane couple, we completed our preparation by sitting down and drinking a couple of hurricanes.

Forgive the iPhone photo 🙂

I developed this recipe for our anniversary (we decided that we’d make drinking hurricanes an anniversary tradition, since they made one heck of a signature cocktail for our hurricane wedding).   I just haven’t had time to share it, because this fall has been all kinds of busy.

Hurricane (Fills Two Large Hurricane Glasses; Probably Serves 4 Reasonable People)
Adapted from Emeril
  • 4 oz dark rum (dark rum, not spiced rum, though that might work okay in a pinch)
  • 4 oz light rum
  • 3 1/3 oz grenadine
  • 2 oz (rounded) orange juice*
  • 3 oz pineapple juice
  • 3 1/3 oz lime juice
  • 1 TBSP superfine sugar

*We were out of orange juice today and replaced it with 1 oz of extra pineapple juice and 1 oz of triple sec – it tasted almost as good.

Pour over ice in a cocktail shaker.  Shake, shake, shake.  Serve in two large hurricane glasses or four or so Solo cups (these puppies are strong!).

Don’t forget to toast friends like Emily (and all the other wonderful friends) who know how to see you through a hurricane.
